Is a bright piercing spotlight absolutely necessary?

No. Whenever possible Milestone Video uses a lighting technique called "Bounce Lighting." Instead of directing a direct beam at the subject we try to direct the beam at an area of white ceiling above the subject so that the subject is lit mostly from the soft diffused light being reflected down from the ceiling.
This technique is easier on the eyes and yields better more realistic video.
We can even shoot without a light on a candle-lit wedding if the bride and groom are extremely light sensitive. Check the stills page to see examples.
